PE 279 Wellness - - Course Syllabus (Formerly 200)

Course Description: Evaluation of lifestyles. Review of health issues: stress, drugs, exercise, body composition, nutrition, cancer, cardiovascular, health, sexually transmitted diseases, aids, aging, and death, and dying. An emphasis on self assessment, taking action and behavior change.

Specific Objective: Review current information, assess behavior patterns and lifestyle, assess fitness levels and develop a plan of action as it relates to:

  1. General Wellness concepts
  2. Stress
  3. Cardiovascular fitness
  4. Muscular strength and endurance
  5. Health issues (i.e. disease, aging, death and dying, exercise, etc)
  6. Body composition and nutrition

Requirements: Students will be expected to change into appropriate attire when necessary for fitness related assessment activities. Appropriate attire will include: shorts or sweat pants, T-shirt or blouse and good tennis shoes.

Lab Work: 10 labs have been assigned from the textbook. Lab work will be due on first class day of the week following the assigned reading date. All labs must be on time and complete, showing the students have read and understand the assigned reading and lecture material. Students will have the opportunity to revise labs not receiving full credit; to be considered for revision labs must be turned in on time with all questions answered. Late lab work may not be accepted and if accepted it will not receive full credit and can not be revised for full credit.

Written Test: There will be three multiple choice tests given during the quarter. 200 points total

The multiple choice part of the test will be from material presented in the textbook. Students may have the opportunity to receive bonus points on either or all of the tests by answering question based on information presented in lecture and/or video. A maximum of 30 points will be available each quarter.

Attendance: Although attendance is not part of the final grade, students are expected to attend and be on time for each class and participate in class activities. Each class session will present material that will assist students in understanding text material, assess their personal health related attitudes and various aspects of Wellness, thus enabling students to make informed lifestyle choices.

Group work and In-class handouts: From time to time additional handouts will be distributed in class and time given to complete the work or students will be assigned to groups for a group project. Students must attend class to receive handouts and group assignments. Work assigned in this manner cannot be made up because time will not be allotted in future class sessions to allow students to catch up on work and no work will be accepted late. Total points 150

Final Project: "Steps to Success" Total points 100

Each student will be required to complete the Steps to Success behavioral modification project to complete the class. This project has two parts.
Part One : Self Evaluation
Using the pink Self Evaluation handout at the end of each unit and /or topic, complete the lifestyle evaluation. Determine where you need to make positive changes towards a healthier lifestyle. Be as complete and specific as possible.
Part Two: Steps to Success Plan of Action.
The Steps to Success Plan of Action handout will be distributed in class during the final week of the quarter. Students must be present to receive it. The plan of action is intended to help students map out a clear plan of change.

Wellness Portfolio: 75 points. Each student will be required to complete a portfolio containing all work completed for the class, lab work and handouts, assessment activities, and any other information related to Wellness and Lifestyle Assessment. It should include any other fitness, lifestyle and diet information collected during the quarter.

The portfolio will be graded for completeness, presentation, spelling, and grammar.

Class portfolio and all written work are due on the last day of instruction. It will not be accepted after the due date.

Class Policies and Procedures

1. Physical Education courses at Shoreline Community College are academic oriented as well as skills development classes. Students will be expected to complete written work, obtain a textbook and successfully complete a written examination.

2. Due dates for work will be announced at the beginning of the quarter and reminders given during the quarter. Due dates will be strictly adhered to. Work handed in after the announced due date may not be accepted, but if accepted will be reduced 10% per calendar day the work is late.

3. Incidence of cheating or plagiarism will be cause for a failing grade on the assignment or test involved.

4. Students have the choice of grading systems (numerical or P/0.0 only), but must exercise this option by the mid-point of the quarter as published by the College. Review the College Catalog for details. No Grade Option forms will be signed after the mid-point of the quarter. It is the student's responsibility to complete the appropriate forms.

5. Students withdrawing from the class after the sixth week of the quarter will not be given the Z grade unless there is a hardship and are making satisfactory progress (passing the class) at the time of withdrawal. Failure to complete class work and low test scores will not be considered a hardship.

 

Physical Education Writing Assignment Specifics

1. Each student must complete at least one (1) of the writing assignment options presented in class. A second paper may be completed for extra credit.

2. Papers must be at least 2 FULL PAGES with top, bottom and side margins of no more than .75 inches. A title page should be used and include your name, class, class time, option and title of your paper. The paper is to be double spaced, typed, using print no larger than you see on this page.

3. Your paper is to be written in your own words. Use no more than two quotes and do not paraphrase. You may write your paper from a creative perspective, or in the traditional research paper format. You must use proper footnotes and work sited format, and provide a bibliography. Refer to MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers for a guide in writing your paper.

4. A bibliography must be included for credit. If you use the Internet as a resource you must provide a printed copy of the article and the URL address. Failure to provide a bibliography will result in a "0" score on the assignment with no opportunity to complete the assignment after the due date.

5. Incidence of plagiarism will result in a "0" score on the assignment with no opportunity to redo the assignment. Webster's' New World Dictionary defines plagiarizing as "to take ideas, writings etc. from another and offer them as your own work."

6. Incidence of cheating on any test or written work will result in a "0" score on that test or assignment.


7. Papers must be turned in on time to receive full credit. On time means on the assigned date before the end of your scheduled class time.

Option 1 - Term Paper

Write a 3-5 page, double spaced, type written fitness or sport related term paper. If using a computer with variable size type size may be no larger than 11 point type. (The type should be no bigger than what you see on this page.) Topics may include but are not limited to the following subject areas:

The topic must be related to the material covered in class.

Use three (3) different references including at least 1 periodical, 1 skills related book, the Internet
and/or one reference book. (Note: If you chose to use the Internet as a resource, attach a printed copy of any and all information and/or source you use when you turn in your assignment.) Site all references using proper footnote or works cited format and bibliography formats. Please refer to MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, R 808.02/G437 for a guide to write your paper. You have the option of writing a research paper according to the above handbook or you may chose to apply the research information in a creative way. For example: You may write your paper on the body's need for different nutrients from the prospective of the stomach, the different court surfaces from the prospective of the ball or you may analyze the underhand pass in volleyball comparing the American, Japanese and European block countries.

Remember, I want to know what you think about the information you have collected. So, use no more than two (2) quotes and do not paraphrase. Using your own words show you understand the information gathered from your sources. Papers that are paraphrased or have more than 2 quotes will not receive full credit.

Option 2 - Internet Assignment


Using one of the Internet addresses listed below complete the following:
1. Go to the website you have selected. Print the screen.
2. From the list that appears on the website, select two sites to visit. You should select sites that yield written articles on the topic you selected in Step 1. Print out the articles NOTE: You may have to proceed through several general web sites until you reach an article. Remember to print out each site and complete the log.
3. Once you reach an article visit one additional site for each article you found in step 2. Print out each article you select.
4. On a separate sheet of paper, keep a log of the www. addresses you visit. You must record the Address/URL, your observations, and a site description.
5. You should now have 4 (four) articles that relate to the original topic you selected. Read each article then write (typed, double spaced) a synopsis of each (approximately 1/2 page each.).
6. Write a 2-3 page (double-spaced, typed) paper that compares and contrast the the articles. You should include writing styles, presentation of information, the site in general, etc. Do not report on the information in the articles but how it is presented and the sites in general.

Extra Credit Lab Work Option

Earn up to 20 points in extra credit by completing four (4) additional labs (5 points each) as listed below.  Extra credit labs are due in you portfolio (clearly labeled).

Extra credit labs my not be revised and must be turned in on time to receive credit.

Labs will be graded for completeness and accuracy.  In completing the labs show you understand the material by incorporating lecture and reading material into the written part of the lab and summary.  Turn in all materials (including computer Print outs for the Health Quest Labs).
