PE 284- Standard First Aid Course Syllabus  (Formerly292)

COURSE OBJECTIVE

To provide students the knowledge and skills needed to render care in a variety of emergency situations.

To provide students with the opportunity to satisfy certification requirements established by the National Safety Council and the American Heart Association. Certification may be granted for: Standard First Aid, Community CPR and/or CPR for the Health Care Provider and American Heart Association CPR.

To develop the ability to recognize potential hazardous situations and engage in problem solving technique to both prevent and respond to emergencies.

To develop the skills necessary to respond to a variety of emergency situations in a safe, confident, and efficient manner.

Note: I will post Power Point lecture presentation one day before the lecture.  The information will remain up of 10 day.  Once the information goes down it will not be reposted nor will lecture material be emailed to student.

GRADING

WRITTEN WORK:

TESTING: Three unit tests will be given during the quarter. Each test will be comprehensive to the extent that it will cover all materials presented (in both the text and lectures) in that unit, and information from preceding units may be included. Unit tests one will be 64 points multiple choice from the textbook and 36 points short answer based on lecture, and Unit test two will be 66 points multiple choice from the textbook and 34 points short answer based on lecture. Unit test three is 100 points multiple choice and 35 points short answer based lecture.

(Note: If any parts of a unit test is given as take home, students must be in attendance when it is distributed to receive a copy. Students sharing any part of a take home test with another student will receive a failing grade on that part of the test. Students not receiving the take home portion of a test must complete it on the scheduled test day in the allotted time). Total points 335

WRITING ASSIGNMENT : Students will be required to write one (1) 3-5 double spaced type written pages on any of two assigned options. See attached writing assignment sheet. This assignment is worth 100 points.

SKILLS : Total Points 54. Completion of skills work is not required to pass the class, but is highly encouraged for all students, but is required for certification. Skill sessions will be scheduled throughout the quarter for several topics. Students must complete the assigned skill work during the time allotted to receive credit for the skills. No additional skill sessions will be scheduled after a unit is complete. Optional skill time may be scheduled within a unit but is dependant on instructor availability.

Skill points can be earned as follows:3 points each skill = signed by the instructor. To earn First Aid or CPR certification, the instructor must test all skills. 54 points plus 27 extra credit points possible.

2 points each skill = signed by two classmates at the time the skill is completed. 54 points possible.

1 point each skill = signed by one classmate at the time the skill is completed. 27 points possible.

Students must execute skill to receive credit for the work... Students signing off skill work for another student without executing the skill will receive a "0" on all skill work.

EXTRA CREDIT:

CPR for the Health Care Provider certification is an optional certification. Students seeking CPR for the Health Care Provider certification should have Laerdal Pocket Mask and valve. NOTE: Some masks will be made available in class for use. Students who successfully complete the CPR for the Professional certification requirements (skills and written test) will earn 10 extra credit points. Work must be completed by the end of the sixth week of the quarter.

FIRST AID KIT: Students may prepare a personal First Aid Kit that will meet their personal, professional and/or recreational needs. 10 points Extra Credit.

SECOND WRITING ASSIGNMENT:

Students may complete a second writing assignment for 25 points extra credit. You may NOT repeat the option selected for your required assignment. EXTRA CREDIT WORK IS DUE ON UNIT 2 TEST

All assignments must be handed in on time or they may not be accepted for credit. If assignments are accepted late they will be discounted 10% per school day it is late. Extra credit will never be accepted after the due date.

Students may select the numerical grade or mandatory P/0.0 option, but must declare their intent by the mid-point of the quarter as established by the College. (See College Catalog for details.)

Final Grade will be based on total points. There are 498 total possible points.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS

Writing Assignment will be due on the date of the first unit test

Writing Assignment for Extra Credit will be due on the date of the second unit test.

Writing Assignments will be graded for both content, and grammar and spelling.

Physical Education Writing Assignment Specifics

1. Each student is required to write one (1) 3-5 full double spaced typed written pages using one of the options listed below. Type size may be no larger than 11 point type or the size on this page. Students must use one different options.
 

2. Papers must be at least the minimum number of FULL PAGES  of text with top, bottom and side margins of no more than .75inches. A title page should be used and include your name, class, class time, option and title of your paper. The paper is to be double spaced typed using print no larger than you see on this page.

3. Your paper is to be written in your own words . Use no more than two quotes and do not paraphrase. You may write your paper from a creative perspective, or in the traditional research paper format. You must use proper footnotes and work sited format, and provide a bibliography . Refer to MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers for a guide in writing your paper.

4. A bibliography must be included for credit. If you use the Internet as a resource you must provide a printed copy of the article and the URL address. Failure to provide a bibliography , Internet addresses and articles will result in a "0" score on the assignment with no opportunity to complete the assignment after the due date. Bibliography, Internet addresses and Internet articles will not be accepted late.

5. Incidence of plagiarism will result in a "0" score on the assignment with no opportunity to redo the assignment. Websters' New World Dictionary defines plagiarizing as "to take ideas, writings etc. from another and offer them as your own work."

6. Incidence of cheating on any test or written work will result in a "0" score on that test or assignment.

7. Papers must be turned in on time to receive full credit. On time means on the assigned date before the end of your scheduled class time. If the paper is accepted late it will be marked down ten percent per school day, after 10 days the paper will be a 0.

Option 1

Write a first aid scenario that shows you understand the concepts and procedures basic to first aid. Use any of the first aid emergencies covered in the textbook and/or class lectures. Be sure to include the following: what lead to the emergency,
risk factors that apply to your scenario and why,
the elements of the Primary and Secondary Survey,
the proper care for the injuries.
You may be as creative as you wish, but terms, concepts and procedures must be used accurately. Do not turn your victim over to the EMS system for care, you are in a delayed care situation 5 or more hours). I want to see if you understand First Aid concepts in terms of prevention, assessment and care.



Option 2 - Internet Assignment

Using one of the Internet addresses listed below complete the following:

1. Go to the website you have selected. Print the screen.
2. From the list that appears on the website, select two sites to visit. You should select sites that yield written articles on the topic you selected in Step 1. Print out the articles NOTE: You may have to proceed through several general web sites until you reach an article. Remember to print out each site and complete the log.
3. Once you reach an article visit one additional site for each article you found in step 2. Print out each article you select.
4. On a separate sheet of paper, keep a log of the www. addresses you visit. You must record the Address/URL, your observations, and a site description.
5. You should now have 4 (four) articles that relate to the original topic you selected. Read each article then write (typed, double spaced) a synopsis of each (approximately 1/2 page each.).
6. Write a 2-3 page (double-spaced, typed) paper that compares and contrast the articles. You should include writing styles, presentation of information, the site in general, etc. Do not report on the information in the articles but how it is presented and the sites in general.
